Moving "My SharePoint Files" to OneDrive

Please note that this guide will only work with Microsoft Windows. If you have a Macintosh computer please contact the HelpDesk at ext. 5555 for assistance.

Introduction

In this guide I am going to walk you through how to move all of your personal “My SharePoint Files” from iShare (old system) to OneDrive (new system). In brief, what we will be doing is “Mapping” the “My SharePoint Files” personal drive to your PC, setting up the OneDrive folder and then copying the files you wish moved over from iShare to OneDrive.

In the old iShare system you would “map a drive” to access your files. With the new SharePoint Online and OneDrive systems you now use the OneDrive app on your computer to “Sync” the files rather than map them. The advantage of this is that the files can be downloaded to your computer and accessed while offline or off of the VPN.

Map the “My SharePoint Files” Personal Drive to Your PC

You may already have your iShare personal Drive mapped to your PC. If you do, you can skip this step and go straight to the Get OneDrive Set up on Your PC step below.

Mapping the iShare Drive

Start by searching for and opening Internet Explorer.

Once Internet Explorer is open copy and paste the following address into the URL bar: https://ishare.mvnu.edu and then press the enter key to navigate there. You will see the iShare home page.

Click on the My SharePoint Files tab, find your “My SharePoint Files” folder, and then click on it to enter it.

Once in your “My SharePoint Files” folder you will see a list of your personal files and folders. Click on the topmost small check box on the list to select all of them, then click on the new Library tab that appears at the top of the screen and lastly, click on the Open with Explorer button that is shown below.

Once this is done a new File Explorer window will appear showing all of the files you just selected. Copy all of the text in the address bar shown below.

Then right click on This PC and select Map network drive….

In the new window that appears paste the text you just copied into the Folder: bar and then select Finish to map the drive.

Finding the newly mapped “My SharePoint Files” Personal Drive on your PC

To see your mapped “My SharePoint Files” drive open File Explorer (shown below).

You have now mapped the “My SharePoint Files” drive. You should be able to see it on the left sidebar in File Explorer.

If you haven’t already, use this OneDrive setup guide to get OneDrive set up and find your new OneDrive folder before proceeding.

Start the Transfer Process (Move “My SharePoint Files” files to OneDrive)

Now that you have both the old “My SharePoint Files” drive mapped and the new OneDrive file folder syncing you can start migrating your files from “My SharePoint Files” to OneDrive. Essentially, you will just be copying and pasting the files from the personal drive to OneDrive but the guide will go though all the steps in detail.

Copying and Pasting the Files

To begin open two File Explorer windows and place them side by side. You can do this by opening one File Explorer window by clicking the icon in the taskbar (seen below) and then right-clicking on the same icon and selecting File Explorer from the list (or just use the keyboard shortcut WIN+E twice).

In one window navigate to the “My SharePoint Files” mapped drive and in the other open the new OneDrive folder you wish to migrate to.

Now we will begin copying over the files to the new OneDrive folder. To do this we will want to select all (or some if you wish to migrate a bit at a time) of the files in your “My SharePoint Files” folder, right-click on them and select Copy.

Once you have copied the files move over to the OneDrive window, then right-click on the empty space in the OneDrive folder and select Paste.

Once you have pasted the files and folders they will start to move over and then upload/sync to OneDrive. If you have a large amount of “My SharePoint Files” this step will take a fair amount of time. While waiting you can continue to use the computer for normal tasks as it syncs. You can track the sync progress and confirm that it is done using the Monitoring OneDrive Sync Progress & Troubleshooting guide.
